How To Clean Plaque Off Dogs Teeth At Home

I Acknowledge I Don't Brush My Canis familiaris's Teeth

Yup, you read that right – I. Do. Non. Castor. My. Canis familiaris's. Teeth.

I've received a lot of flack for this argument.

I've heard things similar. "You're lazy", "You lot're selfish". "You plainly don't intendance well-nigh your dogs" and "Your canis familiaris is going to die" (yes, seriously).

If people really knew me though, and how spoiled and well taken care of my dogs are, I don't call back they would say that. Merely it got me thinking… am I the merely one that doesn't brush my dog's teeth?

Heck no!

According to the American Veterinary Medical Clan, just 1% of dog owners brush pet's teeth regularly. (Source)

That means there are a whole lot of people out there also not brushing their canis familiaris's teeth.

UPDATED: SEPTEMBER 30,2018

Disclaimer: A thorough dental cleaning under anesthesia, and brushing your dog'due south teeth, is considered the "gilt standard" by veterinarians for maintaining your pup's oral health. I am not claiming that there is a direct replacement for that. However, some people don't brush their dog'due south teeth, or cull not to put their dogs under anesthesia (for health or personal reasons), so I wanted to share my experience with alternate methods that are improve than doing nothing at all. I'm a passionate dog Mom, not a veterinary.

Information technology's Not That I Don't Care About Their Dental Wellness

Dachshund teeth before cleaning

Yeah, I know that a build upwardly of plaque and tartar can pb do mucilage disease, missing teeth, and illness.

The affair is that I have a hard plenty time committing to brushing my own teeth every 24-hour interval.

Expect, I dear my dogs but I know myself good enough to know that it merely isn't going to happen. I've tried.

I bought a finger toothbrush and yummy vanilla toothpaste before to try and brush their teeth with. That lasted almost once.

Both dogs absolutely hated information technology. I didn't enjoy it much either and I didn't have the time or patience to "go them used to it".

I bought sprays and gels with "active enzymes" but the struggle with prying open up strong Doxie jaws while trying to shoot the stuff into their oral fissure always resulted with more goop on me than in them.

Think Something About Mary crossed with The Exorcist. (You know my dramatization isn't likewise far off if you take a Dachshund)

I exercise pay attention to their teeth though. I get how of import a pet's dental health is.

Since I remember doing something is better than nothing, and I want to encourage others to take that outset step forth with me, I'thou sharing the 2 things I practise to effort and continue my dog's teeth make clean and gums healthy.

Our Dwelling Routine for Cleaner Teeth

Later some research and testing, I constitute a little at-dwelling teeth cleaning routine that works for the states.

The beginning step in the routine is to sprinkle Plaque Off on Chester and Gretel's food daily.

This softens the plaque on their teeth so that it scrapes off easier when they chew on things. I am not sure how it works because the label says it'due south simply kelp flakes but information technology does.

It gets the plaque soft plenty that sometimes I can scrape a flake off with my fingernail when we are snuggling on the burrow. I don't brush my dog's teeth. Instead, I use PlaqueOff to soften the tartar. Check out my article so see what else I do to keep my dog's teeth clean.

While Plaque Off softens the tartar, I observe it doesn't remove it (although I've heard some people claim that it did for their canis familiaris).

To actually remove the plaque, I need to give my dogs something abrasive to chew on every day.

I tried giving them raw, meaty bones. I'd heard people rave about them – that chewing on the bones every day go along their dog'south teeth sparkly white.

That didn't work for us though.

I tried both chicken and turkey necks but Gretel literally tried to gulp them down whole similar a snake.

I tried rib bones just Chester and Gretel chip off whole chunks and swallowed them, which made me concerned about a potential intestinal blockage.

I tried craven feet and craven drumsticks but I felt the calories in them were too high for 10-lb dogs.

I tried giving them antlers with non much success. Chester and Gretel had zero interest in chewing on plain ol' antlers.

Plus I had heard stories of dog'due south breaking their tooth on an antler or, worse, the antler splintering and a shard piercing their dog's gums.

I tried softening them.

How practise you soften deer antlers for a domestic dog you ask? It's easy.

I soaked them in low-sodium chicken broth, or os broth, for 24-48 hours.

Non simply did that brand them a bit softer for chewing, it infused them with an extra scrap of flavour.

P1030671A However, they still lost interest in the antlers fast so I moved on to something else.

I went back to giving them a bully stick to chew on for a few minutes every day. I know they like the taste and, as long every bit they are supervised, I feel they are safe chewing on them.

Occasionally, for an extra treat and health boost, I dip the end in organic coconut oil.

Kokosnoot oil can aid keep their gums and teeth healthy because it has natural anti-bacterial backdrop (some DIY dog toothpaste recipes use coconut oil as a base of operations).

I may attempt raw, compact basic again someday if I can find something that works for us but, for now, I'grand staying with the bully sticks.

Yes, calories are nonetheless an issue with the corking stick but my dogs don't eat much of it in the 10 minutes I let them chew on information technology.

What We Go Done Professionally: Anesthesia-Costless Dog Teeth Cleaning

If my domestic dog needed to take serious dental work done, I would pay to have them cleaned nether anesthesia.

Withal,  the thought of putting my 15-year erstwhile senior dog, Chester, under anesthesia when the vet did non say it was medically necessary was a little unnerving.

I had heard virtually "anesthesia-free" teeth cleaning through a friend.

I researched it and found information technology did a good job cleaning a domestic dog'due south teeth just that it'southward not as thorough as a deep cleaning with anesthesia.

Since I was just going for "by and large clean" (because, remember, I'm using this method in the place of brushing, which also only gets a dog'southward teeth "by and large clean"), that was ok with me.

I too heard it was cheaper than cleaning under anesthesia – only $165 – BUT information technology is recommended that it exist done twice a yr… so it'due south not that much cheaper, if at all.

Annotation: Anesthesia-costless teeth cleaning is very controversial. To understand the arguments, and my thoughts on them, read my article Anesthesia-Free Teeth Cleaning is Not Evil.

I thought I would requite anesthesia-free teeth cleaning a shot since Chester had no existing molar or gum bug.

He was also a good candidate because he is a calm guy that loves people – fifty-fifty if they are poking him with sharp objects – so the procedure could probable be washed while he was awake.

All the All-time Pet Intendance in Seattle has a doggy dentist technician, who is overseen by a veterinarian, that visits one time a month and performs this anesthesia-free dental cleaning and so I fabricated an engagement.

The vet said Chester did very well (I wasn't allowed in the room with him because he might keep looking at me and not relax).

When he came out of the back room he was all waggy tail and had sparkling white teeth.

I was happy with the results. Hither is the before and afterwards so you lot can exist the judge (pictures unedited except for the watermark).

Chester's Teeth Afterward

At first, I was hesitant to become Gretel'south teeth cleaned this fashion.

Her teeth are worse than Chester'southward though so she needed some kind of cleaning. She is just and so anxious I was afraid she would get super, super stressed.

I told him about her anxiety and he still thought he could do information technology. He said if she got too stressed, he would just stop.

After giving her some CBD to help calm her down, we gave it a endeavor and, to my amazement, the vet said she was calmer than happy-become-lucky Chester.

How Are Their Teeth Doing?

Chester and Gretel had a checkup of their teeth last year at the vet.

The vet was amazed at how make clean Chester's teeth were and that they looked good for you. That's pretty amazing for a modest dog (which are known for having teeth issues) at 15!

Gretel's teeth have ever been a piddling worse than Chester'south even though she is younger than him. Nevertheless though, I ask my vet every time we go in if I should take her teeth professionally cleaned and she said they weren't at the signal of needing information technology.

Are their teeth gleaming and white? No.

However, I'm convinced that the home routine, and occasional anesthesia-free cleaning, is better than doing nothing.

In fact, I might argue that it's just equally – or virtually as good as – brushing your dog'due south teeth.

What do yous do for your canis familiaris's dental health?
